When it comes to advantages that frequent Delta fliers will appreciate, the Delta SkyMiles Reserve credit card is in a league of its own. If you’re back in the travel game and searching for a top-tier card for your travels.

You would mostly desire this card for the following reason if you paid $550 annually for it: entry to an airline lounge. The American Express Centurion and Escape Lounge networks, as well as the extensive global network of Sky Club lounges operated by Delta Air Lines, are all accessible for free with the Delta Reserve credit card.

You effectively pay an additional $55 to gain access to the Centurion Lounge and all the other benefits of the card, which include a free checked bag for you and up to eight companions booked on the same reservation, among many other benefits, given that an individual Sky Club membership from Delta costs $495 per year.

In other words, if you’re considering paying for a Sky Club membership, it generally makes more sense to hold the Delta Reserve card.

How does the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve work?

The Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express card is intended for devoted Delta customers who fly frequently enough—for example, several times per month—to accumulate enough miles to make up for the high annual fee.

It is true that frequent travel is necessary to justify the card’s yearly charge. For instance, if you spent $2,000 per month on purchases made through the Delta website, you would accrue 72,000 miles. We calculate that these miles are worth $1,108.80 when used to book domestic Delta flights.

The $550 price would be more than justified by those benefits. The value of some card benefits increases the card’s returns even more. With additional savings from access to free food and drink (not to mention a relaxing reprieve) in Delta SkyClub or Amex Centurion lounges, the annual voucher that offers a domestic round-trip for a companion might be worth hundreds of dollars on its own.

This card becomes very profitable after your monthly travel expenses exceed roughly $2,500. With Delta’s SkyMiles program, you’d probably be well on your way to Silver status, as your $30,000 in yearly expenditures would get you more than half of the 25,000 MQMs (medallion qualification miles) needed to qualify each year.

With that status, you would accrue an extra seven miles for every dollar you spent on airfare, giving you 210,000 more miles that, according to our calculations, would be worth $3,234 in airfare.

Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Main Benefits

Lounge access

Simply said, the biggest benefit of having the Delta Reserve Amex over another Delta credit card is lounge access.

When on a same-day, Delta-marketed, or Delta-operated flight, primary and additional cardmembers of the Delta Reserve Amex are granted free access to Delta Sky Club lounges. When flying on a Delta partner airline aircraft that is not promoted or run by Delta, cardmembers can also pay a charge of $39 per person per location for entry to the Sky Club.

Annual companion certificate

The companion certificate that cardholders receive each year following their account anniversary is another significant perk of the Delta Reserve Amex. When you book one adult round-trip, the companion certificate is good for one ticket in first class, Delta Comfort+, or Main Cabin for a companion. On the second ticket, you merely need to pay the taxes and fees (a maximum of $75).

Status Boost

After spending $30,000 on your card in a calendar year, new cardholders receive Status Boosts, which can help you earn 15,000 MQMs. You can also earn an extra 15,000 bonus MQMs after spending $60,000, $90,000, and $120,000 in a year. By charging $120,000 to your card, you can earn up to 60,000 MQMs every year.
